I couldn't get Anna up for open mike, but I did watch her play and sing "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight" in the band scramble contest. She's improved a lot since you last saw her. Plus, and more importantly, she's a bunch of fun. I played with Ted a couple times--he's sounding really good on that guitar, taking breaks like a pro. I had practiced "Beaumont Rag" but hadn't played it with anybody. Same thing for Ted. Got to play it with him right after dinner one evening, and it actually worked out. I like his voice, I like his breaks, and I like his rhythm. I'm gonna make a point to play with him more next year, if he'll have me.
I didn't meet another Newfoundlander. I was on the lookout for her tho. Did she come week 2?
Played with Jay more this year. Talk about a guitar player. He's already amazing and running fast toward awesome. If I practice hard, maybe I can keep up with him for one more Kamp. Talked more with Debbie, his mom, and played with her some. She's doing very well on the mando. Not hard to tell why Jay is such a nice young man.
Got to take "master classes" with both Don Stiernberg and John Reischman. Learned a lot in both from comments to all the players. I especially enjoyed Mr. Reischman's "latin rhythms" class in the mando scramble. I'm playing the pieces he gave us every day. Don turned us on to using the key's harmonized scale for improvising. That's gonna take a little longer to get, but I can already see/hear the possibilities.
Hope the problems with your rental unit are well in hand. Make sure your schedule stays clear for next year!
Laura
You missed a really good time, Wanda. I'm sorry you didn't get to come.
Hey Wanda!
Sorry to hear that you were unable to make it to camp - I was talking to Steve on Sunday and he said you had to cancel. I was looking forward to meeting you, however, there's always next year. And of course, we are not that far apart geographically speaking.. I hung around the Knoxville area for an extra week and we went back to camp on Thursday night for the concert. It was great to see how the other week lives. I was talking to Ted for awhile, both at camp and in Halifax airport. He seems to have enjoyed himself as well. We did talk about carrying the guitars on in soft sided gig bags - I did not know that they would allow us to do that. Next year, I will be taking mine on board - no more baggage compartments for my baby.
Take care - drop me a line when you get a chance.
All the best!
The other Wanda.
what about anna????did she have a blast too and get up and play?? did yu see ted there?? and did yu meet the other wanda from NL who apparently went this year
I'm sorry you couldn't come. It was a great Kamp! Met some really nice folks. I learned a lot. Got to have a master class with both Don Stiernberg and John Reischman. Don planted lots of ideas in my head with his class. Busy learning the harmonized scales already. Working on latin tunes from JR's scramble class. Great fun! We missed you.
I just saw the part about expecting an email from us. I didn't touch a computer all week. I played with some MandoCafe folks at the open mike. I got to play a couple nights with Jay the guitar player. He has really improved, and he was already awesome. I also got to play with his mom, who deserves to have such a grea kid.
hey...guess yufigured out i had to cancel last minute..i was expecting an email from yu guys but it didn't come. I had a stop work order on the reno that happened on thursday before i left and it turned out to be a nightmare ..i jad to refocus and deal with many gov depts so i knew i went i would be on the phone and the emails..whats the point of that???so..did yu gu7ys have fun??did yu play at the bar???or the concert hall??did yu miss me??? I was able to get my fees credited for next year
wondering if yu looked?? and if maybe yu are going to walmart or some place like that if yu would buy me a small kettle and i'll pay yu for it when i get there..and no..the coofee in the cafeteria sucks...i am a coffee snob!!!! Are yu meeting anna at the festival before kamp?? I really can;t and in fact..i have major renos happening at a cottage with some "problems" so i am going but i should be here next week..i have to go to kamp for me....
I'll look again, but I'm pretty sure. I had my brother put it in the attic and he was questioning why I was saving it since there was no cord. So he looked too. I'll look again.
I knew I didn't have the cord before I left Kamp, but you had already gone. I told you that I didn't have the cord and suggested you look for it in my first email to you after kamp. If you don't have the cord, then I'm going to toss the pot part, which I was keeping on the off chance you would still have the cord. The only kettle I have requires a stove top. Portable kettles to boil water are not plentiful in the sunny (hot, and muggy) south. Everybody's got a coffee maker, and that's usually it. We had one for the pop up camper, but it went kaput, and now we just take our coffee maker. I'll ask around for one to borrow, but I'm not optimistic. Do you hate the cafeteria coffee?
Here's my cell number--put me in your cell contacts. I'll try and remember to leave it on Sunday afternoon and evening, in case you have trouble with flights or anything. I'm thinking if you tell them ahead of time to let somebody else pick up your key and kamp materials they might let me or Anna do it. I'd be glad to. They might require the key deposit up front tho. Let me know whether I should ask them for your key.
do yu have a kettle that yu can bring..i have to have coffee in the am and i won't have room to bring another..no idon't have the cord???i thought i gave it all to yu....
Hi Wanda--Ankle's doing fairly well; still a little sore and it swells with a lot of walking. But I think I'll be in better shape then I was last year with the bum knee. (Had surgery on that in late October.) I have your kettle, at least I think I can find it, but you gave it to me without the cord to plug it in with. I kept it anyway, hoping that you still had the plug in part. If you don't have the power cord, there's no use for me to bring the kettle, as I don't have a power cord that will fit it.
I think you need to email Steve and Donna to let them know you will be arriving late and will need to do that late check in thing. You've got to make sure you get a room key. Look at the brochure they sent you--it says what you're supposed to do. I don't remember exactly, but I do know that you're supposed to let them know. If you don't have the brochure, I think the same info is on the www.acoustic-kamp.com site. Will the shuttle from the airport to the campus still be running when you get in?
DO THIS Wanda. Email Steve re your late arrival.
On a less stern note, I am really looking forward to seeing you and playing together. I love those Jethro-type chords. I'm glad those are what you are learning. They make sense and sound better than many "chop" chords.
I figure you won't have room to bring your bowlback, but I sure would like to see it. Any pictures? How's it working out for you? Does it sound really different from your Gibson?
Wanda!
I'm getting so excited. Hope I can make it thru this week. Can hardly wait to go to Kamp. When are you arriving on Sunday? I guess we won't know until we get there, whether we got our same rooms as requested. See you soon,
Laura
Hi Wanda,
My Phoenix was built in 2000 and was used by the maker, Rolfe Gerhardt, as a demonstrator--he took it around to festivals and shows and such. It's been played by lots of folks, but I'm the first owner after the maker. I got it in perfect condition--couldn't find a scratch on it. I bought it straight from Rolfe, and he gave me a new mando warranty with it. I absolutely LOVE it. I'm looking forward to your putting it thru its paces.
WRT an electric mando, I think you should look at the mandolincafe.com for a used one. They show up quite often, so you'd have many to choose from. Since some folks are leery about international shipping, if you were interested in buying one, you could have it shipped to me, and then I could get it to you at Kamp or before. There are some nice ones on there now. I would expect that in Asheville, you would have very limited choice and would probably have to buy a new one. I think it would be a blast to have an e-mando! I could bring a little amp along to Kamp so you could rock out.
I can't believe how excited I'm getting about Kamp! I get to drop the crutches/knee scooter on April 2nd, if all goes according to plan. Six more weeks in the stupid walker boot. I'll have about a month to get my foot and ankle back in shape for getting around in Maryville.
I'm practicing Jerusalem Ridge every once in a while, so we can play that one together. Anything else I should work on?
I'm looking forward to seeing you again. I'm sure it won't feel like a year has passed since last June. It'll be great to see Anna again too. I'm counting on some no-nonsense rhythm guitar playing on her part. Let's also make her sing more this year. I know she's been working on both skills. Do you want me to borrow a fiddle for you? I think you said Steve would loan you one, but I think I could roust one up around here. I'm no judge of fiddles, but I think I could make sure it was at least decent.
Anna said she had talked to you about the BG festival in Cherokee the weekend that Kamp starts. I'm trying to talk my brother into pulling the pop up there and us camping. We could get some serious jamming in at a festival.
It's really spring here now. Lots of nest-building birds. Lots more tweets and chirps. Makes me think of my bird watcher friend up there with the icebergs.
See ya soon,
Laura

WANDA--how's it goin'. Weather has taken a turn toward warmish around here. Close to 70 for the last several. It'll snap back cold again, but the warm days have started me thinking about KAMP. Can hardly wait. I wish one could put sleep in the bank and save it for June. Then we could play all night long. Just so you'll know, and especially for you, I am occasionally playing my guitar to make sure I don't forget how.
How are those chords coming along? (nudge, nudge) Want me to send you some charts with helpful (or at least I hope so) hints?
Surgery on my poor broken ankle Tuesday. Gonna be all better by Kamp time.
Laura
Hi Wanda, there may be the start of a smart alecky comment back to you floating around. I hit some button--and I don't know what happened.
My email is caublelr@forsyth.cc
Anna's: annachiro@yahoo.com
And yeah, that's the headstock of my new (to me) Phoenix Ultra. It is the most easily playable mando I've ever tried. Sounds great. Bell-like tone (if I pick it right) and lots of sustain. I've had since right before Christmas. I'll send pix via your other email.
I'd love to see any pix you care to send. You know I have a pretty good picture of you. Would look great instead of you shallow man...er...rather shadow man.
Laura
i hour a day...come on..thats it......just kidding..i know yu go to kamp for mando..what kind of mando is that?? I assume the pic is of the mando neck..looks fancy to me..
