Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Kamps

Gold Award Acoustic Kamps

Hank Wright

What tunes are you working on for Kamp?

I started working on a few tunes that are played at kamp, they are great but just not in the top 20-40 (etc) list. They are:
Chinquapin Hunting (Gus showed me this one, finally decided to work on it rather than stumble over it each year at kamp, awesome tune)
Midnight on the Water (waltz that I started playing last year, still working on a break in the upper register)
Popeye's Waltz (Peter Fryefield showed me this one couple years ago, then I got the master Russ B to play it for me at kamp last year and I recorded it, really beautiful tune)
The Pleasant Beggar (another Russ tune tabbed in last year's book, for me its been quite a challenge to get this one down and up to speed, the melody zigs when I want to zag, but its a really cool tune!!!)

Someone else learn these so I can play them with you at kamp !!! So what are you working on, I'll go learn those!

I'm working on a bunch of Celtic tunes and oddly enough several tunes that I've gotten help from Russ with. Specifically, Trip to Durrow, Waynesborro, Pleasent Beggar...I really like this one....On my own I'm working on 'When At Last' the beautiful title song to Russ's last album. Celtic wise--Wisemaid, Opera Reel, Chours Jig, Idlewild Jig, Homeward Bound, Growling old Man......, The Mountain Road....and anything else that Keith White sends me!

I've been working on a variety of music on all instruments, and several of the Celtic tunes mentioned will be in a gig I'll play at Mugsy's Hideout Restaurant in Murray on Sat. They are celebrating St. Patrick's Day that evening, so I get 2 hours of solo fun!

Don't know Popeye's Waltz, so I need to find that one!

Gus and I are planning to do Wizard's Walk by Jay Ungar on fiddles, so hope some of you can play the back-up! It's a great contest piece!

I did play When at Last at a Retirment Center show a week ago, and that went very well, although it was unaccompanied. That's my favorite guitar solo! I did get to play it with Russ Barenburg last summer at Kamp, so I'll always remember that.

Fiddle Tunes: I Don't Love Nobody, The Autumn Leaves, Back Home Again in Indiana, Dill Pickle Rag, Limerock, Draggin' the Bow, and some others. Anybody else play these?

Guitar Tunes: Cherokee Shuffle with words, Tyler Grant's Grey Eagle, Stone's Rag, Crazy Creek, KY Waltz and TN Waltz, Blackberry Blossom with words.

Usually during Spring Break week, I start deciding what to work hardest on. Right now, it's Celtic city on fiddle around here, ha ha.

Wow, you are busy Conny! I've seen Popeye's Waltz in the "Waltz book III" i think that's on Jay unger's site. However I really learned it from Russ himself, recorded him playing it on my iPod last year, also it he taught it way back in kamp 99 there's tab in the book from that year.

Ok you and Gus will have to teach Wizards Walk cuz i've not heard of it before. Crazy Creek been messing with that one as well.

See you in June!

Hey Dale what key to you play Interstate Rag in? I thought Steve taught it in D but Mark plays it in G(?) so I'm not sure which key jammers would tend to play it in.

Ok New Five Cent Piece, don't hear that one very much so that's a good one to learn... I recall playing that one every once in a while, but felt I was hacking my way through it. So I'll put that one on the plate.

Old French is a great tune which is on one of my all-time favorite albums "Travellers" by Robin Bullock, Butch Baldassari, and John Reschman - its the first track and played with Wise Maid which is on my plate to learn as well. I think Mike Stanglands website has tab for Old French. Thanks Tim! Hank
