Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Kamps

Gold Award Acoustic Kamps

I have been learning to flatpick for about a year now and would like to buy a better guitar. My budget is $500.I would like to know what guitars in this price range you would suggest. I have been looking at the blueridge br40 or br60, Alvarez ad60 and ad70, and the silver creek guitars, they are cheap for an all solid wood guitar so I don't know how the quality would be. Also what is better, rosewood or mahogony back and sides? Thanks for the help.

Hi Louis,
My advice is, play them all, walk away for a couple of days, then go back to the one you remember best. Not very scientific I know, but it's such a personal thing.

Cheers

Graham is right there. Narrow down your list by playability and tone. Which to you plays and sounds the best? Then have the store owner play the ones that you've narrowed down and see what sounds best out front.
See you in June!

Thanks guys, I went to some guitar stores last weekend and played a lot of guitars, I played some blueridge guitars that sounded good, but the one that stood out to me was a taylor 110. It is a little bit out of my price range but after hearing it I think I will save up and buy it. I had the store owner play it as well and he played a martin d15 too and I think the taylor sounded much better. The taylor was very loud and it sounded very crisp and had good bass. Have you ever played a taylor and do you think this would be a good choice?

Personally I'm a big fan of the Taylor 110. It is a great guitar for the money. I bought my son one and it sounds and plays great. He just got home from college yesterday and he brought the 110 with him - which is very cool because I like to play it when I get the chance. Big thumbs up from me!
